Thinking Beyond Tradition: New Perspectives on Plants and Landscapes - A full day of garden seminars featuring five nationally-recognized horticultural professionals. This event is produced by the Horticulture Co-op of Metro St. Louis and St. Louis Community College at Meramec Horticulture Program in association with the St. Louis Master Gardeners.

The 2005 St. Louis Garden Symposium will feature the following 5 presentations:
  • Presentation 1: "Shrub Roses: Roses that Work in Midwest Gardens" by Ping Lim, Internationally Recognized Rose Hybridizer, Bailey Nurseries (St. Paul, MN/Yamhill, OR)
  • Presentation 2: "Exploring for Cutting Edge Plants: Let's Talk About What's New in Perennials and Their Companions " by Chris Hansen, Director of Horticulture, Wayside Gardens(Hodges, SC)
  • Presentation 3: "Compatible Shrubs for the New American Landscape" by Steve Vander Woude, Horticulturist and Marketing Director, Spring Meadow Nursery (Grand Haven, MI)
  • Presentation 4: "Hot Plants for the Midwest: The New Age of Using Tropicals in the Summer Landscape" by Dennis Schrader, Horticulturist; Co-owner, Landcraft Environments, Ltd (Mattituck, NY); Author: "Hot Plants for Cool Climates"
  • Presentation 5: "A Whole New Perspective for the Home Front Landscape" by C. Colston Burrell, Plantsman, Gardener (Free Union, VA); Author: "Perennial Combinations"

The St. Louis Garden Symposium will also feature a special plant sale featuring several of the companion ColorChoice Flowering Shrubs discussed by Symposium presenter Steve Vander Woude. Symposium attendees will have the opportunity to purchase some of the newest cultivars of Buddleia, Caryopteris, Hibiscus, Hydrangea, Physocarpus, Sambucus, Viburnum, Weigela and many more! Designer Container Gardens on Display The Symposium facility will be embellished by a variety of container gardens featuring plant combinations created by the area's finest horticultural designers. The Gardens will be the subject of a design competition judged by a team lead by Fox 2 KTVI TV Home Garden hosts Dave and Janis Murray. Janis and Fox 2 Chief Meteorologist Dave Murray will announce the 1st and 2nd place winning entries during the morning break. Community Service Organization Displays Our region is fortunate to have a variety of non-profit organizations providing horticulture service and gardening education. During the morning and lunch breaks, the a variety of community service organizations will offer staffed informational displays. The 2005 Garden Symposium will feature exhibits by the following organizations:
