The New Urbanism and Your Personal Landscape: Maximizing Landscape Excitement in Smaller Spaces - A full day of garden seminars, demonstrations, exhibits and workshops featuring both nationally and locally-recognized horticulture professionals. This event is produced by the Horticulture Co-op of Metro St. Louis, in cooperation with St. Louis Community College at Meramec Horticulture Program in association with the St. Louis Master Gardeners.

The 2007 St. Louis Garden Symposium will feature the following KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS:
  • Keynote Presentation 1: "Up Close and Personal Garden Border Companions" by Dan Heims, Internationally Recognized Introducer of New Plants, Founder and President, Terra Nova Nurseries(Canby, OR)

  • Keynote Presentation 2: "Smart Tree Selections for Downsized Home Landscapes" by Paul Cappiello, Executive Director, Yew Dell Gardens(Crestwood, KY)

  • Keynote Presentation 3: "Big Effect for Small Spaces: Maximizing the Experience of the Small Garden"" by Richard Hartlage, Principal, AHBL/Landscape Architecture Group (Tacoma/Seattle, WA)


  • A new feature of the 2007 St. Louis Garden Symposium will be a WORKSHOP SESSION offering a choice of 4 presentation topics and presenters:
    • "The Garden Pathway as a Critical Garden Element: STEPABLES to the Rescue!" by Francis Hopkins, Founder and Creator of the STEPABLES collection; President, Under a Foot Plant Company(Salem, OR)

    • "Winter Interest for Small Scale Spaces: Utilizing Dwarf Conifers" by June Hutson, Horticulturist, Missouri Botanical Garden Kemper Center for Home Horticulture

    • "Tropicals Gone Wild!: Maximizing Summer Garden Effect" by Christine Kelley, Proprietor, Cottage Garden (Piasa, IL)

    • "The Fragrance and Taste of the Garden: Great Planting Combinations Utilizing Herbs" by Kathleen Ferrell, St. Louis Herb Society


    During the break and lunch periods, Symposium participants will have ample time to visit:
    • PLANT SALE for Plant Enthusiasts featuring plants discussed by the presenters.

    • BOOK SALE featuring book signings by the keynote presenters.

    • Designer Container Gardens on Display: Judging of the container gardens will once again be lead by Janis and Dave Murray of FOX2 KTVI "Home Garden".

    • Container Garden Design and Planting Demonstrations

    • Community Service Organization Displays.
      Our region is fortunate to have a variety of non-profit organizations providing horticulture service and gardening education. During the morning and lunch breaks, the a variety of community service organizations will offer staffed informational displays.

    Watch for the March 2007 issue of The Gateway Gardener Magazine containing the complete printed program for the 2007 St. Louis Garden Symposium. The Gateway Gardener Magazine is NOW available at over 300 gateway region outlets including select Schnucks and Dierberg stores.
